Road Safety at Work

Driving is the most dangerous work activity that most people do. RoSPA began the campaign to promote the issue of Managing Occupational Road Risk in 1996. As a member of the Government’s Work Related Road Safety Task Group, we helped to establish a national strategy on work-related road safety, including the development of the HSE guidance for employers on their duties to manage risk on the road, which states that “health and safety law applies to on-the-road work activities as to all work activities and the risks should be effectively managed within a health and safety system”.

The Road Safety Division (R S D) is a Division within the Department of the Environment. It is responsible for promoting road safety, training and educating road users, producing the Highway Code, producing policy and legislation, and monitoring the performance of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland (D V L N I) and Driver and Vehicle Testing Agency (D V T A).

Casualty Reduction Targets
In 2000, the Welsh Assembly Government set targets for the reduction in road casualties in the period up to 2010. Compared with the average for 1994-1998 we want to see:

  • a 40% reduction in the total number of people killed and seriously injured;
  • a 50% reduction in the total number of children killed or seriously injured;
  • a 10% reduction in the rate of slight casualties per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled.
