2nd Scientific Research Meeting
Second meeting to follow up will take place at RoSPA Head Office in Birmingham on the 17th February. The first meeting was largely a brainstorming session which asked more questions than we had answers for. But it did identify some important issues which needed more clarifications or research. The proposed follow-up meeting should be much more focused to provide some answers and a firmer basis for pointing the way forward.
A range of issues arising from the last minutes requires further clarification (e.g., are there types of crashes which 'at work' drivers have more than other drivers?, what are the predictors of crash involvement?, why should driver training work?, etc.) A mapping exercise would be useful to explore the available research regarding each issue e.g. small summaries, main points in the arguments and how it fits into the context of the bigger picture of work related road risk. Research references would be useful along with research approaches, theories, gaps, samples/examples, etc. Basically producing some answers and the direction for more answers without actually writing a research paper.
This meeting may become the working party to take developments further along the steps proposed. This group could also draft a plan, research 'road map' or manifesto before sending out more widely for comments.
