1st Scientific Research Meeting

The first Scientific Research meeting was held at Napier University, Edinburgh on 2nd May 2003. Attendees included those from various universities, consultancies, safety organisations and others interested in research.

The objectives of the meeting were set out to:

  • exchange views and review some research briefings;
  • conduct some scoping or mapping of the key issues (for example, on prevalence and risk, causal factors, scope for prevention), the current evidence base (leading to an evidence needs analysis); and to
  • debate the need for a work related road safety (WRRS) research forum.

Round table discussions and presentations of current research work helped to address questions such as 'how big a problem is occupational road risk (prevalence)?', 'what do we already know? 'and 'what do we need to know/ what do we want? 'The 'way forward' was discussed along with methodologies and challenges to be faced.

Actions for next steps proposed included:

  • Some analysis before next meeting to decide shape of Forum, keep it live, strategies for developing agenda?
  • Chairman's suggestion was for a working party to develop, and a research plan/manifesto to develop in line with mapping exercise on what we know and what we need to know.
